Welcome to t-havo
t-havo is available across the Netherlands in an increasing number of Dual Language Education schools and it seemed only right to offer our students the possibilty of excelling in the havo department too in English language subjects.
The theme in the department is Enterprise (ondernemerschap), unique to our school, and will be working as a thread through all of the English language subjects. This will mean that the students will be picking up skills that will be of benefit to them during their school careers and of course later on in life, whether that be during a future course at a Further Education establishment or as an entrepreneur running his/her own company.
The English language skills learnt will help students in their future courses at HBO-colleges in the Netherlands which offer large proportions of their courses in English or are taught by non-Dutch speakers in English.
Regardless, our pupils will be leaving the havo department well-armed for their futures with:
- a high quality havo diploma;
- Cambridge Checkpoint Statements of Achievement in English and Maths;
- an English language diploma in Business English from the University of Cambridge ELA (English Language Assessment)
- a skills diploma in the form of an iGCSE in Enterprise from the University of Cambridge International Examinations
So how does this fit into the course?
In year two, the dedicated teachers will be teaching the following subjects in English:
|History (new 2017-8 in Havo 2)|
|Design & Technology|
In addition to learning the content of these subjects, the pupil will be taking part in a cross-curricular project, similar to the "Dragon's Den" on television or the Dutch variation: "Het beste idee van Nederland." This will be an educational way of putting the pupils' skills into practice and solving problems in the world around the pupil.
In year three, the entrpreneurs will start preparing for their two international examinations that will run for two years. The iGCSE (international General Certificate of Secondary Education) will start in Enterprise. This exciting course will teach all about how to start a business and how to survive in business. After a year's theory, it is then up to the pupils to start their own business or complete a case study on an existing one- a real hands-on course which will deliver the pupils an internationally-recognised diploma in Enterprise.
In addition to this course, in the English classes, the students will start work on the Business English Certificate (BEC) in year 4 and will be learning how to use their English in a business environment. This course will be examined by the University of Cambridge. The certificate can be used to show language proficiency at further education colleges and universities worldwide, which often saves extra time in sitting entrance examinations to show proficiency levels in English.
At the end of year three, the pupils will finish their "tto-junior programme" and they will have completed two Cambridge Checkpoint exams in English and Maths. These diagnostic tests will produce Statements of Achievement showing how the pupils have done in these two subjects against the others in their year.
In havo 4, a lot changes. The students are now in their fourth year and will be concentrating on their Dutch national examinations. All subjects will now continue on in Dutch as required by the Dutch Ministry of Education. However, so that our pupils do not forget the language they have learnt in the first three years, they will be working on in English with a Business English course and an iGCSE qualification in Enterprise alongside their choice of Dutch subjects in the upper forms. These courses will be examined at the end of havo 4.
We believe that this formula of English language education alongside the rigorous Dutch education system, will offer our pupils "Education for life!"
